P's View: Williamsburg Sprint 7/8/17

Crap, has it really been 10 days already since this race! My blog posting skills have been failing along with my reading, studying, or getting anything that doesn't include swimming, biking, running, weights, work, or a foam roller (which is also lacking). With all that said, here is my race report and thoughts on the Williamsburg Sprint Triathlon.

4:30 AM: BEEP BEEP BEEP!
4:35AM: BEEP BEEP BEEEP! Okay, okay, I'm up. Hey, nothing hurts, I feel good, I hope I feel this good tomorrow, this is the best I have felt in weeks! Okay, now let's get dressed.
5:00 AM: "Mom, we really don't need breakfast for a sprint right? We are taking it "light" anyways and I'm not hungry." Cashew butter at the starting line will suffice I think. I do need something but this is not suppose to be a race for me, just a warm up and run through for tomorrow.
5:25AM: WALKING from OUR CAMPER to the staring line (AMAZING) to get set up with Little Triva Dani's help.
5:30AM: Oh Sweet Rock Tape! No one is in line, I am getting taped right now, we are not taking this great feeling in my knee for granted, we will tape you and make you strong!
5:40AM: Feeling like I have forgotten how to set up my transition at all and have no idea where my crap needs to be and in what order.
5:45AM: Well shit, that wasn't half bad, I don't have as much crap as I thought! Now, what am I going to do to suppress the nausea I now have since I have all of this time to waste.
6:10AM: WALKING down to the swim start from transition to get prepared for the athlete briefing at 6:15, okay today's goals: Don't Drown, Don't Wreck, and Don't Bonk! Obtainable goals are the key to my training 😅.
6:25 AM: Holy cow, I am getting in the water in a triathlon for the first time in a LONG time and they want me to TREAD water for 5 minutes?! I think not, I'll wait with Susan Haag. She has to be smart right? She has done 102 Ironmans!
6:30 AM: (AIR HORN NOISE) We are off! Okay, I am definitely going to drown. Why are all these people drowning me! I am not going to make it tomorrow, there will be more people and more waves and I am going to drown right here. Someone is going to give me a concussion in my warm up sprint triathlon. (Few moments later) Shew, I have finally found a spot and I am not going to drown, I am for the most part alone, mom is near me she won't let me drown, right?
6:50 AM: Holy cow this sprint is a full iron distance swim, it must be, it must be! I can't see the swim-in yet!!
6:56 AM: Ewwww! What the hell did I just trudge through to get on to dry land?! I will not be looking forward to that tomorrow. Is my chip still on my leg or did the man-eating quick sand suck it off!
6:58 AM: I am so happy I did not drown! I am so happy to be on my bike! I love to bike! I love this course! I love the trail! There is no pressure this is just a "warm up" for tomorrow! Practice your aero position, get a feeling for your bike, and just have fun!
?:?? AM: (Can't remember exact times now, halfway turning point on out and back bike) Okay, mom hasn't caught me yet which means I must not be doing very bad today, but she will be here any second, I KNOW that!
?:?? AM: T2 Mom didn't catch me on bike! That is a miracle! (I think I have gone my normal 15-16mph avg on the bike)
?:?? AM: Oh crap, "Hey mom!" As I finish getting dressed, mom catches me in T2 (No Surprises There).

I am now on the run, doing my 1min/30sec intervals from the beginning, I am taking it "light" today. I was looking for an under 11 minute mile pace, which is not light for me, but wasn't going to push it if I wasn't feeling it. My legs feel like the cinderblocks tied to my feet weigh 300lbs a piece but doable to drag for 3.1 miles. About .25 miles in I can here a familiar voice behind me... Crap, she is definitely going to pass me, I must be going slow as turtle.

A few minutes later we are now playing leap frog with our intervals, sounding like trains passing each other back and forth. Finally, "Mom, do you just want to run with me, this is ridiculous? We will finish with the same exact time, we started at the same time!" The last 2 miles of that run were so much more fun and enjoyable. I am still completely oblivious to any times I have completed or paces I have been holding. I just know I'm not completely uncomfortable and don't feel like I'm "racing" just having fun. I do say about mile 2 to Triva Val, "Mom, I haven't seen anyone in my age group pass us, only about 25 people got out in front of me in the swim and I don't think it was a lot of women....", we just let the thought kind of pass.

8:23AM: We finished strong!
8:24AM: Okay gotta get Dani ready for her race, I'll stay here, I have a feeling I need to check the results.

8:25AM: HOLY CRAP NO WAY!!
8:26AM: "MOM, I WON!" Mom replies, "well holy cow! Check mine!"
8:45AM: Awards Ceremony, both bringing home second place, feeling good and extra extra happy! Glad we stuck together so we could push through it and both place!

Sprint was AMAZING! Flat, fast, and fun! Swim is muddy, but doable! It's ways more fun when we are together!

Wrightsville Beach Marathon Race Report Part 2

I left out a few key points in part 1 that made this race a marathon I completely plan on running again next year! The Course:  beautiful, even when running over the draw bridge (I don't like bridges), the volunteers are SUPER, there are 3500 runners together on the first loop and it makes you feel such a rush of being part of an important movement of bodies and sweat. The Crying Opportunities: this course had plenty of places to cry, after the half and full split, where you were spread out enough that emotional breakdowns and supernatural visits from family members can be experienced without judgment. I am an EMOTIONAL runner. I cry a few tears in every race, happy, sad, hurt, it doesn't matter I cry. This race had 3 crying experiences (that is pretty average). Crying spell 1: Mile 19ish, my hamstring is killing me. Same thing happened in WG Marathon but it is so intense and unwavering it can be hard to bear, which leads to a few angry tears. Crying spell 2: Mile 2...

Killer Countdown!

Today I am so excited and ecstatic about the marathon I can barely contain myself. Although I know this is how I will feel as soon as we start: With the countdown at 2 days until race day the eating habits change a bit. I personally have to make sure I keep my carbs high enough (not a common problem) and make sure I take the time to slow down the workouts ie. yesterday being limited to one 1 hour workout. When you go as hard as we do slowing down is HARD! Mentally the slowing down is the biggest challenge because now all I think about is what if I roll my ankle walking down the hall, or trip over a curb, or bang my knee, or trip over the dog in the kitchen. Our minds are such funny things. We go 16 weeks if not more training for these races and you get down to the last two weeks and think about everything under the sun, even alien abduction, as being a threat to your race day. The stir craziness of preparing this week has made my mind a mental madhouse. Cook food, wash clothes, ...

Just an update and a bike ride

After the CPR incident last Tuesday, the rest of the week flew by including: 4 new tires, a 6 hour training for work, and going to see Beauty and the Beast with a sweet friend and her son for his birthday. The one question that keeps lingering in my mind is, "How does it feel that you saved someone's life?" Well..... It feels like I got to help someone cherish their family a little more. It feels like I made my members feel more comfortable and safe at the Y. It feels like I helped a few people think about their health a little bit more. But most of all it really makes the statement "You aren't promised tomorrow" ring hard in my mind. Cherish your moments.... Today was a normal Tuesday + a 35 mile bike in the afternoon. What a release! I needed a push and a challenge to cleanse my soul in the sun and my mind in the wind. Now to slow down and prepare for this marathon that we are so ecstatic about we decided if we started walking now we could defi...
